Muscle Development Research

The primary mission of Dr. Starkey’s research group is to advance the understanding of the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling normal skeletal muscle development and growth as well as elucidate those underlying the myopathies currently impacting the poultry industry. Their work will focus on investigating the mechanisms behind how various dietary factors as well as feeding and management strategies impact muscle stem cell activity and regulatory molecules that mediate muscle development and growth. Their aim is to conduct experiments that will ultimately be useful in devising production strategies to maximize the efficiency of muscle growth without sacrificing animal health, well-being, or product quality.
